Continuing Education Requirements

In the last two years, so many changes have occurred in the New York real estate continuing education requirements. Most recently, on December 21st, Governor Kathy Hochul signed a series of new Fair Housing bills into law. Including additional required continuing education topics for the real estate salesperson and broker licensee.

What are the Current Continuing Education Requirements?

As of July 1, 2021, all licensees must successfully complete 22.5 hours of approved continuing education. It must include at least 2.5 hours of ethical business practices or NAR Code of Ethics.  At least 1 hour of recent legal matters and at least 3 hours pertaining to fair housing and/or discrimination in the sale or rental of real property or an interest in real property. At least 1 hour pertaining to the law of agency except in the case of the initial two-year licensing term for real estate salespersons. If it’s your first renewal cycle 2 hours pertaining to the law of agency must be completed.

It must include at least 2.5 hours of ethical business practices or NAR Code of Ethics.  At least 1 hour of recent legal matters, at least 3 hours pertaining to fair housing and/or discrimination in the sale or rental of real property or an interest in real property. And at least 1 hour pertaining to the law of agency except in the case of the initial two-year licensing term for real estate salespersons. If it’s your first renewal cycle 2 hours pertaining to the law of agency must be completed.

What happens if I do not renew my license?

If you do not renew your license, you cannot conduct any real estate activities that require a New York State real estate license in accordance with Article 12-A of the Real Property Law. There are no grace periods that allow you to continue working while your not licensed. You have two years from the date your license expires to renew your license.

How to Renew my Real Estate License?

A Real Estate Salesperson license is good for two years and the license expiration date is printed on the license pocket card along with your unique ID Number. About three months prior to your license expiration date. The State will send you an email and post card reminding you it’s time to renew your real estate license. Both reminders provide you with written instructions on how to renew your license online through your eAccessNY account. Remember, you must have a sponsoring broker to be eligible for license renewal.

How do I take Continuing Education?

Effective December 7, 2021, new regulations allow real estate schools already approved by Department of State. To offer qualifying and continuing education courses virtually via live remote programs. Providers, at their choosing and subject to reasonable restrictions, may now offer live distance education courses.
